On September 5, 1971, Van Morrison recorded a good amount of material live for radio broadcast before a small studio audience at Pacific High Studios near San Francisco. While much of this has surfaced in extracts on numerous bootlegs, this two-CD set, with nearly 20 songs, offers a fuller version than is usually available from other sources. If you're looking for unreleased live Van Morrison, this should be one of your first stops.
The sound is very good and clear, although it's a bit duller than the standard expected of official concert recordings. Morrison is in fine vocal form as he runs through much of his early catalog, including some of his most famous songs ("Tupelo Honey," "Into the Mystic," "Domino," "Blue Money"), though "Moondance" is absent. There are less-celebrated original compositions here, too, but most interesting of all are the few detours into even less-charted territory: covers of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" (an excellent, passionate version) and "Hound Dog," as well as Van's own "Friday's Child," dug up from his old Them days.
